THE LATEST FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS NEWS: MINKA KELLY

Scott, Minka & Adrianne seek 'Justice'
Monday, October 15th, 2007
LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - Young Hollywood is stepping into the superhero hall of justice to vie for parts in the comic book movie "Justice League of America."

Director George Miller flew in Saturday from his native Australia for a marathon casting session that started Sunday and continues Monday, seeing 35-40 actors test for roles in the big-budget Warner Bros. project.

Parts up for grabs include Superman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash, Aquaman, Green Lantern and the Martian Manhunter.

On the roll call are Adam Brody (Fox's "The O.C."), Joseph Cross ("Running With Scissors"), D.J. Cotrona ("Windfall"), Mary Elizabeth Winstead ("Grindhouse"), Michael Angarano ("Sky High"), Teresa Palmer ("Wolf Creek"), Max Thieriot ("Jumper") and chart-topping rapper Common.

The cast of NBC's "Friday Night Lights" is well-represented as well, with Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki and Scott Porter also among those testing for parts. No costumes are involved in the tests, which are being taped as actors read script pages.

If the names feel young, it's because Miller is looking for actors to grow into their roles over the course of several movies. Sources say the man behind the "Mad Max" and "Babe" franchises is testing not only for the roles themselves but how the actors interact with one another while keeping an eye on the look of the whole group. The director is due to present his findings to the studio midweek.

IGN: Friday Night Lights Exclusive Cast Interviews
Tuesday, June 19th, 2007
According to IGN:

Last week the producers and cast of Friday Night Lights took part in a Q&A for their acclaimed series. While some of the content was similar to another discussion they'd done a couple of months ago, there was one big difference: this time everyone knew they were definitely coming back for a second season, as the show was officially renewed last month. Executive Producers Jason Katims and Peter Berg were pretty tight lipped on details about Season 2, though Berg said he was incredibly excited about what Katims had told him were his plans for Episodes 1 - 8. The one detail Katims gave was that Season 2 would pick up eight months after Season 1 and immediately deal with the pregnancy of Tami Taylor (Connie Britton), which was revealed in the Season 1 finale.

Before the event began I was able to speak to many of the Friday Night Lights cast for exclusive interviews with IGN. Those I spoke to included Kyle Chandler ("Coach Eric Taylor"), Adrianne Palacki ("Tyra Collete"), Gaius Charles ("Brian 'Smash' Williams"), Aimee Teegarden ("Julie Taylor"), Minka Kelly ("Lyla Garrity"), Zach Gilford ("Matt Saracen"), and Connie Britton ("Tami Taylor").

Minka Kelly cast in feature film 'The Kingdom'
Saturday, June 16th, 2007
According to BuddyTV

Minka Kelly, who stars in the drama series, Friday Night Lights, will be appearing in the big screen this fall as Ms. Ross in The Kingdom.

According to the film’s official website, the story revolves around 4 FBI agents who go to Saudi Arabia after "a terrorist bomb detonates inside a Western housing compound in Riyadh" and causes an international crisis. They are given 5 days "to locate the madman behind the bombing," but upon their arrival, are met with much suspicion from Saudi authorities.

Aside from Kelly, the star-studded cast includes Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx, Jason Bateman (Arrested Development), Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner (Alias), Jeremy Piven (Entourage), Richard Jenkins and Ali Suliman.

Filming began last year in Phoenix, Arizona, and after a few months, transferred to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where the cast and crew remained for one week. Peter Berg, co-creator of Friday Night Lights, is directing a script written by Matthew Michael Carnahan and Academy Award nominee Michael Mann, who is also credited as one of its producers.

Originally, The Kingdom was scheduled to be released on April 20th, but was pushed back to September 28th. The decision to reschedule was based on the favorable reactions the movie received from test audiences and Universal Pictures executives. The rescheduling will also give the movie a better chance of being considered for awards.

Although this is Minka’s first big budget film, the Friday Night Lights star has appeared in a number of productions. She made her television series debut on the show, Cracking Up, and followed that with guest roles on other shows such as Drake & Josh, American Dreams and What I Like About You. Minka has also worked on several independent films, including the award-winning Devil’s Highway and State’s Evidence.

IGN: Cheering for FNL - Minka Kelly
Friday, June 8th, 2007
On NBC's excellent series Friday Night Lights Minka Kelly portrays Lyla Garrity, the picture perfect cheerleader who seemingly has it all. But things quickly went sour for Lyla this season, as an injury left her boyfriend Jason (Scott Porter) in a wheelchair, leading her character down a much more rocky path, filled with many turbulent emotions and some highly questionable actions. Those actions included an affair with Jason's best friend Tim (Taylor Kitsch), and even some vehicular mayhem, as she used a car to smash up her father's car dealership.

Despite being perhaps the most critically acclaimed new series of the past season, Friday Night Lights wasn't a sure thing for renewal, and thus it was with great relief that fans and critics alike greeted the news that the show would indeed be returning in the fall. Last month, at the NBC Upfront event, where the network announced their full fall lineup, I was able to speak to Minka Kelly, to find out what she felt about Lyla's past and what's to come.

IGN TV: There was so much speculation going back and forth, but what were you guys hearing the past couple of months, in regards to the show coming back?

Minka Kelly:
Of course there's rumors and everyone wants to stay positive. You're hearing, "Oh yeah, of course you'll come back, because it's just such a critically acclaimed show, and it's such a great piece of work!" But you never know. Because the ratings weren't as high as we'd like them to be. But luckily we have so much support from Kevin Reilly and NBC, so we had a little bit of hope. [Editor's Note: Reilly has left NBC since this interview took place] But we were biting our nails, because we didn't find out until a couple of days ago.
